Usage Guide

What Is Osteoarthritis?

Osteoarthritis is associated with a breakdown of cartilage in joints and can occur in almost any joint in the body. It commonly occurs in the weight-bearing joints of the hips, knees, and spine. It also affects the fingers, thumb, neck, and large toe. Cartilage is a firm, rubbery material that covers the ends of bones in normal joints. Its main function is to reduce friction in the joints and serve as a "shock absorber." The shock-absorbing quality of normal cartilage comes from its ability to change shape when compressed.  Osteoarthritis causes the cartilage in a joint to become stiff and lose its elasticity, making it more susceptible to damage. Over time, the cartilage may wear away in some areas, greatly decreasing its ability to act as a shock absorber. As the cartilage deteriorates, tendons and ligaments stretch, causing pain. If the condition worsens, the bones could rub against each other.
The main causes of osteoarthritis include:
•    inherited factors
•    job factors that result in high levels of joint stress
•    overweight
•    abnormal joint or limb development
•    previous joint injury
•    excessive exercise
•    previous diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis and gout

Treatment & Care

There are several types of osteoarthritis medicines. Anti-inflammatory drugs, also called NSAIDs, are the main treatment for osteoarthritis. Getting a shot of corticosteroids directly into a sore joint can reduce pain and inflammation quickly and effectively. When other osteoarthritis medicines don’t work, narcotic pain relievers may help. These medicines causes to several side effects such as gastrointestinal disorders, stomach bleeding, liver and kidney failure. Patients also have to gradually increase the amount of their medicines because the body becomes resistant to analgesic effects of drugs.
