Colguard® natural product is a special formulation of peppermint oil for treatment of bloating, indigestion and abdominal pain, and also for relieving bowel spasms in the Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS). Peppermint oil is a carminative with potent antispasmodic properties. In vitro and in vivo experiments show that it reduces abdominal symptoms in the Irritable Bowel Syndrome by relaxing gastrointestinal smooth muscle tissue by reducing calcium influx. Considering that with oral administration of peppermint oil, it is rapidly absorbed from the proximal gut, and frequently has unwanted effects such as heartburn.
